Two men, aged 37 and 40, were arrested red-handed on Friday while stealing copper from an old thermoelectric power station, the GNR said on Saturday, in which 500 kilograms of copper wire and about two thousand euros were confiscated.
In a statement released this Saturday, the Setúbal territorial command said that the arrest was made by members of the Sines territorial post after a preventive patrol.
After detecting “suspicious movements” near the old thermal power plant, the military surprised two suspects who entered the facilities through “an opening created in the external network.”
According to the note, two suspects cut and removed a copper electrical wire from one of the coal transportation towers.
The GNR seized €1,900, 500 kilograms of copper wire, three mobile phones, a car and various materials related to the illegal practice.
The detainees are awaiting a hearing in the Santiago do Cacem court on the issue of the application of coercive measures.
