PR expresses concern and condolences regarding the death of GNR after the aptitude test

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Saturday expressed condolences to the family and expressed “dismay” over the death of a PNS soldier who suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest during a physical fitness test.

“The President of the Republic learned with horror of the death of Corporal Enrique Rocha, a soldier of the operational unit of the Republican National Guard. In this moment of deep grief, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expresses his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cabo Enrique Rocha, as well as to the soldiers of the National Republican Guard,” reads the official note of the President of the Republic, published this Saturday on its official page.

The 48-year-old soldier was hospitalized for two days at Santa Cruz Hospital in Carnaxida and placed on a ventilator, which was turned off late Friday afternoon with the family’s consent.

The corporal of the Group of Public Order and Intervention (GIOP) suffered a cardiovascular arrest at around 11am on Wednesday during a physical fitness test, which included a five-kilometer run, in Cascais.

The soldier was rescued by the PNR medical team at the scene, after which INEM was called and managed to resuscitate the soldier, who, however, did not recover brain function.
