The Cape Verdean government on Monday begins construction work on a photovoltaic solar park on the island of Sao Vicente, one of the projects with which the archipelago wants to achieve 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2026.
The energy transition is necessary to reduce energy prices in Cape Verde, since it is mainly (about 80%) produced by diesel power plants, which results in the accumulation of high fuel costs in its final cost.
The government is set to give a boost to solar energy production, with a park on the island of Sao Vicente coming online on Monday, as well as work on the islands of Boa Vista and Sal with a total capacity of 15 MW – in addition to 10 MW. in the capital Praia, Santiago island.
According to the executive’s plan, smaller solar parks will be installed on the islands of Santo Antan, Fogo, Mayo, São Nicolau and Brava.
In terms of wind power, Cabeólica, a public-private partnership, will increase its production capacity from the current 11 MW to 24 MW in the Praia Park thanks to an expansion project on which work should begin within the next four months.
According to targets announced by the government, Cape Verde aims to achieve 30% of its electricity generation from renewable sources by 2026, exceed 50% by 2030 and reach almost 100% in 2040.
