Angolan President discusses peace with British and Kenyan envoys

The President of Angola received this Monday in Luanda the ambassadors of the British Prime Minister and the President of Kenya, with whom he discussed peace in the DR Congo and South Sudan, as well as investments such as the Lobito Corridor project.

Richard Benyon, UK Minister of State for Climate, Food Security and Rural Development, said at the end of a meeting he had with Joao Lourenço that the United Kingdom wants to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Angola and welcomed the efforts of the head of the Angolan state to end the armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo).

Referring to his recent visit to DR Congo, Benyon said he made sure to convey his gratitude to João Lourens “for his leadership and sense of state to end this war and bring this war to an end.” [que aquele país siga] on the path of peace.”

Rishi Sunak’s envoy added that he had told João Lourenço that the UK would work very closely with Angola on the Lobito Corridor project.

On the other hand, he mentioned the “pride” that non-governmental organizations, namely The Halo Trust, are supporting Angola’s mine clearance program to become the world’s first mine-free country.

Joao Lourenço also received this Monday in a separate meeting the special envoy of the President of Kenya, William Ruto, with whom he spoke about the peace process in South Sudan.

Speaking to the press at the end of the hearing, Charles Keter said he had arrived in Angola, accompanied by the special envoy of South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit, to report on efforts related to the peace process in that country.

Keter said the issue will begin to be discussed next week in Kenya, keeping in mind that the updated 2018 peace agreement, which expires at the end of this year, is being implemented.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has asked his Kenyan counterpart to lead the negotiation process between the coalition government and all its forces, as well as all others that have not signed the agreement.

In March, Salva Kiir Mayardit made a 48-hour working visit to Angola at the invitation of Angolan President João Lourenço.

Angola and South Sudan enjoy a relationship of friendship and cooperation, with both countries being members of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL).
