Temperatures will be “well above average for this time of year” from Thursday, with highs of 25 to 27 degrees and potentially reaching 30 degrees in some places on the continent, the IPMA said.
Speaking to Lusa, meteorologist Mara João Frada explained that the mass of cold air currently on the continent will gradually be replaced by a mass of hot tropical air.
“We will be superimposed by an easterly current that will bring a circulation of tropical air affecting mainland Portugal. Temperatures are expected to be above average, more than 10 degrees, except in the Algarve,” he said.
According to a meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), temperatures are already expected to rise slightly on Tuesday, between 2 and 4 degrees, especially in inland regions.
“On Wednesday the temperature will rise a little more, about 4-7 degrees, except in the Algarve, and on Thursday it will rise again. Overall we will have an increase of about 15 degrees in some places,” he said.
The above-average hot weather for this time of year will continue until at least Sunday, Maria João Frada said.
“Thus, from Thursday, maximum temperatures will range from 25 to 28 degrees, possibly lower along the entire coastal strip and in the Algarve, being below 25 degrees. In the Tagus Valley, in some places in the Douro Valley (the innermost part) and The Alto Alentejo is separated by temperatures of 30 degrees,” he said.
According to the meteorologist, these maximum temperatures are above average and will begin to contribute to heatwaves at IPMA stations from Thursday, with the exception of the Algarve.
“Madeira will also have hot weather. It will be influenced by the easterly current, included in the circulation of the same anticyclone that affects mainland Portugal, where there will also be relatively warm transport from North Africa for this time of year,” he said.
The IPMA meteorologist also noted that in the Madeira archipelago, maximum temperatures will rise significantly from Wednesday to reach almost 30 degrees, which does not rule out the issuance of hot weather warnings.
