Benfica fans are not allowed to attend the Vélodrome, Marseille’s stadium, which will host the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
“From Wednesday 17 April until Friday 19 April, all people who are Benfica supporters or behave as such are prohibited from entering the Vélodrome Stadium,” the note published, as quoted by the Record, said.
Faced with this decision, Luz reacted on Tuesday and decided to “cancel the tickets already issued and purchased by Marseille fans,” Benfica said in a statement.
“Benfica vs.again contacted the Portuguese authorities, who warned about high risk potential regarding the presence of Marseille fans in Lisbon,” he adds.
According to the club, security forces believe that fans may commit acts of violence. The Reds are continuing to sell tickets only to club members with a membership through March 21st.
Benfica appeals that “Marseille fans are not traveling to Portugal and Benfica fans are not traveling to France to avoid potential tense situations.”
The Eagles believe the decision by the French authorities, which the Reds deeply regret, jeopardizes the spirit of European competition.
The decision will be made only on the eve of the match between Marseille and Benfica at the Estádio da Luz stadium, the return match is scheduled for April 18 in France.
