An explosive device, usually used in military exercises, was discovered this Wednesday on the sand near Troia in the municipality of Grandola and will be detonated by the navy, the captain of the port of Setúbal said.
Marco Serrano Augusto, also a local maritime police commander, told Lusa that the explosive device was found this morning by a member of the public on a beach near the Roman ruins of Troy in the Caldeira area.
According to the person in charge, these are a type of phosphorus devices that exist in the area due to “military exercises taking place there” and are “used to signal activity in the water.”
“It contains phosphorus and is explosive in nature and must be reported,” Serrano Augusto said.
According to the captain of the port of Setúbal, the marine police have already requested the assistance of the Navy’s Sapper Diver Detachment No. 2 for a controlled detonation of the device on site.
The area was sealed off by NCIS until the Navy arrived.
In addition to the maritime police and the navy, the person in charge added, the National Institute of Emergency Medicine (INEM) is involved in the operations.
