Cuando Cubango police rejected UNITA’s request for an escort and confirmed that four were injured

Police in Cuando Cubango confirmed that four people were wounded in an attack on a caravan of UNITA (Angolan opposition) deputies on Friday, but denied that the party had requested an escort from the authorities.

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) condemned on Friday an attack on a caravan of deputies carrying out parliamentary work in the province, which left one person dead and six injured; the information was later corrected: nine were injured, five of them seriously. , as well as damage to vehicles

The culprits were allegedly militants of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), which has been in power in Angola since 1975, says Liberty Chiaka, leader of the UNITA parliamentary group.

In a statement accessed by Lusa today, the leadership of the National Police of the province of Cuando Cubango indicates that the attack was carried out by local citizens who “threw blunt objects” at cars, resulting in four people being injured.

Police said the wounded were treated at a community health center and had stepped up their response and patrol efforts to restore order.

The statement also said that the Quando Cubango provincial command had not received any requests for an escort to guarantee the safety of the caravan, contradicting the UNITA leader, who regretted the absence of authorities and said he had received threats.

“The police are making every effort to identify the criminals and bring them to justice,” the press release said.

The provincial command also asked the parties to “cooperate with the authorities whenever they hold mass protests” so that the national police can guarantee security.
