According to information published in the statement, this Friday the Ministry of the Environment is occupied by students of the End Fossils movement.
According to the same source, students are holding a sit-in protest in the atrium of the building, sitting on the floor and connected by metal pipes.
They are demanding implementation of a plan that “guarantees the transition within scientific time frames” and are refusing to leave the ministry until the environment minister commits to guaranteeing an end to fossil fuel use by 2030.
“We didn’t want to stay here, but we have no other choice,” says the student.
“We have learned that we need to end fossil fuel use by 2030. The UN just this week warned that we have two years to develop and begin implementing the necessary plans. But the government still has no plan to ensure the end of fossil fuel use within the planet. Even after we have presented them several times with a plan to guarantee this, we cannot accept our condemnation by a government that refuses to acknowledge climate reality,” he adds.
According to the same note, the plan the students have is a report of the Working for Climate campaign, which aims to respond to “climate and social crises in a way that is equitable and consistent with climate science.”
Activists say they have no choice “but to go directly to the institutions of power” because they are being ignored.
“We will peacefully occupy this ministry so that they will have to listen to the plan of science and justice. The choice is up to the minister: will she choose to guarantee our survival? In any case, we will continue the fight, because we cannot let the fight for our lives begin,” says the student.
