Passenger rescued from ship off Azores

An 85-year-old passenger was rescued from a ship off the Azores with multiple organ failure and required “urgent” medical attention at a hospital, the Navy announced this Saturday.

According to a press release, through the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Delgada), the Navy coordinated the medical rescue of an 85-year-old American passenger aboard the Maltese-flagged passenger ship Celebrity Ascent.

The boat traveled approximately 707 nautical miles, equivalent to approximately 1,310 kilometers, southwest of Terceira Island.

According to the Navy, the passenger “developed a clinical picture of septic shock with multiple organ failure and required urgent inpatient medical care.”

The rescue was carried out by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter EH-101, which took the patient to Lajes Airport on the island of Terceira, where she was dropped off this Saturday at 9:30 am.

The operation was developed jointly with the Orientation Center for Emergency Patients – Primorye (CODU-MAR) and in collaboration with RCC Lajes.
