The National Republican Guard (NRG) detained in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança district, two men, aged 29 and 35, who were growing cannabis in a makeshift greenhouse, one of whom was placed in preventive detention, the force reported Monday.
Authorities seized 192 cannabis plants, 60 cannabis seeds, 22 doses of hashish, 6.47 doses of marijuana and three doses of MDMA (a synthetic drug), 1,317 euros in cash and various materials used in the production of cannabis.
Luse commander of the Bragança territorial detachment, Captain Edgar Mazeda, said this was an “atypical situation” for the region.
“Not only because of the quantity seized, but also because of the way it was produced in a greenhouse inside a residential building,” explained the commander, adding that this operation, launched on Friday, took place in the city of Macedo de Cavaleiros and near.
The GNR statement also said that the plantation is “equipped with all the technology and equipment necessary to produce the above-mentioned drug in large quantities without being detectable from the outside.”
The investigation lasted about a year and resulted in the issuance of six search warrants: two homes and four vehicles.
“The suspects manufactured the drugs and then sold them to several people,” added Edgar Mazeda.
Two of the detainees are responsible for drug trafficking crimes. They attended the trial Saturday in Mirandela.
As a coercive measure, one of the individuals was placed in preventive detention. The other was released on condition of weekly appearances at police stations.
