Four crew members of a sailboat with a damaged rudder were helped by the Povoa de Varzim rescue station on Tuesday, about half a mile (about 900 meters) from the entrance to the port of Vila do Conde.
According to the National Maritime Administration, the alarm was raised by the sailboat’s captain (in charge of operations on board) at 4:35 p.m. A team from the Povoa de Varzin rescue station immediately left for the scene. “Upon arrival at the scene, it was determined that the four crew members on board were physically healthy and did not require medical attention, and the sailboat’s rudder was damaged after encountering difficulties when entering the port,” the Maritime Department explains. .
The rescue station crew towed the sailboat out of concern for the safety of the crew, navigation and the port of Vila do Conde.
The owner has been notified and the vessel will only be able to sail after undergoing inspection to ensure normal shipping conditions.
The local maritime police command of Povoa de Varzim and Vila do Conde took responsibility for the incident.
