Mozambican Foreign Minister Veronica Macamo noted this Thursday in a statement to Luse that April 25 is remembered in Mozambique “with gratitude” for “creating a new era” in the independence processes.
“The Carnation Revolution of 1974 decisively changed the course of Portuguese history. She restored, on the one hand, the freedoms that the Portuguese people so craved, and on the other, established a democratic regime that prevails and flourishes to this day in Portugal. Portugal,” explains the governor in a statement on the occasion of the 50th anniversary on April 25.
The head of Mozambican diplomacy emphasizes that “in Mozambique, April 25 is remembered with gratitude for the beginning of a new era, which opened the way for negotiations, concessions and recognition of the independence of the peoples of Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor.” .
Macamo adds that “at that time, Mozambican nationalists, fighting for the liberation of Mozambique from the colonial yoke, vigorously welcomed the coup that overthrew the common enemy,” “the fascist dictatorship that oppressed the Portuguese people, and the colonial-fascist regime.” that he subjugated the people of Mozambique.”
“After independence was achieved in Mozambique and freedom was established in Portugal, bilateral Portuguese-Mozambican relations of friendship and cooperation developed satisfactorily and 50 years later have reached a very high level,” admits Macamo.
The diplomat also states that “the full development of the ties uniting the Mozambican and Portuguese peoples took place in an atmosphere of great friendship and renewed trust”, “the source of which goes back to the common goals to which nationalists in Mozambique and anti-fascists in Portugal aspired half a century ago.”
As an example of the current level of relations, Makamo cites bilateral summits led by the heads of government of both countries, “formalized about a decade and a half ago” and which “ensure closeness and affection between the respective political leaders and ensure that bilateral relations are stimulated and deepened.”
“This enduring trajectory of friendship and cooperation is broad, abundant and comprehensive. Governed by two key instruments, the Strategic Cooperation Program and the Defense Cooperation Framework, bilateral cooperation includes the political-diplomatic, economic, social and cultural spheres,” the minister detailed in the same statement.
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi began a four-day visit to Portugal on Wednesday to mark the 50th anniversary on April 25 at the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“Given that April 25 has a multilateral dimension, the celebration of Freedom Day will allow President Filipe Nyusi to interact with other leaders of the member countries of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries who will gather in the Portuguese capital,” he explains to Minister Macamo.
“This will undoubtedly be an occasion to remember and reflect on the decisive role the national liberation struggle played in the birth of the uprising of young Portuguese soldiers, which led to the planning and execution of a coup against the fascist Estado Novo regime,” he concluded.
