The parliamentary leader of the PSD praised the speech of the President of the Republic in Parliament this Thursday for recalling the main figures of the national democratic history and highlighting calls for dialogue and the development of public policies.
Hugo Soares spoke to reporters in parliament at the end of the ceremonial session marking the 50th anniversary on April 25, after he was asked about the content of the speech of the head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
“I believe that the President of the Republic made a very extensive speech in which he welcomed the main figures in the democratic history of Portugal. I think he did well because the celebration of the 50th anniversary on April 25 is also a celebration of history and honoring those who built it. He did it in a very sincere way, expressing the feelings of all Portuguese,” said the chairman of the Social Democratic Party .
Hugo Soares also noted that the President of the Republic “has repeatedly left messages calling for dialogue and the development of public policies that can improve the lives of the Portuguese.”
When asked about Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s position in favor of reparations for Portugal’s colonial past, the leader of the Social Democratic Party declined to comment.
“Today is the day to comment – and I am not a commentator – on the speeches that took place in the hemicycle at this solemn meeting,” he said.
Hugo Soares chose to emphasize that the PSD, at the ceremonial meeting of April 25 in the Assembly of the Republic, “was the only party that gave a voice to the independent citizen, which demonstrated that it is an example of what is intended.” in this Parliament: Dialogue, openness, modernity and building the future.”
