The AP-1 between Bergara and Maltzaga will be closed tonight to enable the opening of the Lesarri tunnel

The first phase of the comprehensive renovation works of the Lesarri tunnel in Bergara began in September and the facility is scheduled to return to operation tomorrow.

The AP-1 motorway will remain closed this Friday night between the Bergara South interchange and the Maltzaga interchange for works to enable the opening of the first phase of the renovated Lesarri tunnel, as reported by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.

The works to reinforce the support, coating and renovation of the installations of the two tubes of the Lesarri tunnel on the AP-1 located near Bergara began in September.

The closure will begin at 9:00 p.m. in the Behobia direction and at 9:30 p.m. in the Vitoria direction and will last until nine in the morning on Saturday. As an alternative, traffic heading towards Vitoria from the AP-8 must use the Eibar exit and continue on the GI-627 until the Bergara-Sur entrance to access the AP-1. Those traveling on the AP- 1 towards Bilbao or Behobia must take the same route in the opposite direction, leaving through Bergara Sur to join the AP-8 via the Eibar junction. The work will be carried out at night to minimize traffic effects.

Once the renovation of the tunnel in the Vitoria-Gasteiz direction is completed, the two tunnels will remain open between May and September 2023 to facilitate the traffic that is generated during the summer with departure and return operations.

After the summer interruption, in September 2024, work will resume to renew the tube in the Behobia direction. The work will end in May 2025 and traffic will be diverted through the by-pass placed in the renovated tunnel in the Vitoria-Gasteiz direction.
