An attempted exorcism at a school in Bissau on Friday left 10 students unconscious after inhaling incense smoke brought into class by a teacher, a medical source and one of the victims said.

The incident took place at the San Leonardo Murialdo school in the Jericho area on the outskirts of Bissau.
“They said that in our school there is a student who often faints and it was necessary to exorcise an evil spirit that is on the ceiling of our classroom. Some students started screaming. Others fell to the floor of the class; they were all girls. “, – he said. Cassia Ka.
The incense produced “intense smoke” that was inhaled by everyone in the class, the young woman added.
Several students sought medical help in Simão Mendes, where, according to general practitioner Nicolau Vital, “some became disoriented.”
“Patients were admitted to the hospital here with suspected incense smoke poisoning. Patients say that they lost consciousness after inhaling smoke from incense that a priest or pastor brought into the classroom,” the doctor noted.
Most of the students treated in Simão Mendes were discharged and returned home, Vital explained.
The practice of exorcism in schools is repeated in Guinea-Bissau, especially in rural communities and suburbs of Bissau.
