The Israeli army statement leaves no doubt about the forceful actions of Tel Aviv forces in the Gaza Strip carried out “in the last few hours” by land, sea and air. “Fighters and other aircraft attacked dozens of terrorist targets, including terrorist infrastructure, launch sites, armed terrorists and observation posts. The Navy joined in these attacks, providing fire support and assistance to the ground forces.” No details about the operation were given, only that “several” militants were killed.
The other side of the coin is revealed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). “The constant bombardment by Israeli forces from air, land and sea of vast areas of the Gaza Strip is resulting in increased civilian casualties, displacement and destruction of homes and other civilian infrastructure.”
A tragedy that could take on even greater proportions if Israeli troops advance on Rafah, home to some 200,000 residents and 1.2 million displaced people. The international community and Israel’s main allies acknowledge that an invasion of the far southern Palestinian enclave would be a disaster, but Prime Minister Netanyahu wants to keep it open. *WITH LUSA
