The government claims it had no advance information about pension payments

This Monday, the government said it had no prior information that Social Security was going to adjust pensions in April due to a change in IRS withholding tables. The chief executive said he received the news with “surprise” and ensured that the measure was solely the result of the leadership of the Socialist Party.

“In January 2024, it was decided to give an artificial increase to retirees with lower IRS withholdings in order to make this adjustment later, after the election, during the transition period,” according to a statement sent to newsrooms.

According to the government, the decision of the previous government was not mentioned at the transition meeting and was not communicated to the current government at any level prior to its implementation.

This Monday, Social Security announced that it will make adjustments to IRS withholdings on 328,000 retirees between April and May to correct withholdings made in January of this year.
