Ecuador files suit against Mexico at the International Court of Justice for granting asylum to former Vice President Jorge Glas

Ecuador has filed a complaint against Mexico at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for granting political asylum to former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas and allowing him to take refuge in the Mexican embassy in Quito, which was raided by Ecuadorian police on April 5 in an attempt to detain him.

“The complaint seeks a decree and declaration that the United Mexican States has failed, among other things, to comply with its obligations not to provide asylum to persons who are being prosecuted or tried for ordinary crimes or have been convicted by competent courts of law.” This is stated in a statement by the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry published on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

According to Ecuador, Mexico was obliged to hand over Glas to the Ecuadorian authorities in accordance with both Article 3 of the 1954 Diplomatic Asylum Convention and Article 1 of the 1933 Political Asylum Convention, which provide that any person prosecuted or convicted cannot get asylum.
