Portugal is the fifth country in the European Union with the lowest average wages, with agriculture and fisheries and hospitality and catering the sectors that earn the least income, according to data published Tuesday by Pordata.
In a portrait of the Portuguese labor market for 1 May (Workers’ Day), Pordata points out that both the national minimum wage and the average Portuguese salary are among the ten lowest in the European Union (EU).
The data shows Portugal is the fifth-lowest country with the lowest average salary when taking into account the cost of living, just above Slovakia, Greece, Hungary and Bulgaria.
On the other hand, salaries in Spain are on average a third higher than in Portugal.
Pordata also reports that in 2022, the average annual salary per employee (not taking into account purchasing power parity) in Portugal was the 10th lowest among EU countries, and salaries in the 10 countries with the highest rates were at least twice as high salaries in Portugal. 10 countries in the tail (including Portugal).
Portugal’s minimum wage, when measured by purchasing power parity, is also among the ten lowest of the 22 European Union countries with minimum wages.
“In 20 years, Portugal has been overtaken by Poland, Lithuania and Romania in national minimum wage (SMN),” he says, adding that the national minimum wage is 26% lower than Spain and 47% lower than in France.
The data shows that the average monthly salary of employees in Portugal (including overtime, holiday and Christmas bonuses or bonuses) in 2022 was €1,368.
“The national minimum wage is moving closer to the average wage. In 2002, the minimum wage corresponded to 43% of average earnings, and in 2022 this percentage has increased to 52%,” he notes.
The Pordata photo also shows that average salaries in Portugal are among the lowest for workers in accommodation and catering (€873) and agriculture and fishing (€916).
On the other hand, the sector of financial and insurance activities (1705 euros), electricity, gas and water (2243 euros), as well as international organizations and other extraterritorial institutions (3156 euros) are those in which the average salary is the highest.
