According to a report by Banco de Portugal, the number of instant transfers and contactless payments increased in 2023.
Retail payments increased 13.3% by quantity and 12.9% by value.
Electronic payment instruments continue to be a favorite among the Portuguese. Compared to 2022, immediate transfers grew by 33% in quantity and 38% in value.
In Portuguese daily life, cards are the most used means of payment, accounting for 88.9% of the number and 27.2% of the value of transactions, with corresponding increases of 14.5% and 12.7%.
The use of contactless and online card purchases also continued to grow. In the first case, 31.1% in terms of numbers and 32.7% in terms of value. In the second case, 35.3% and 33.7%, respectively.
The number of urgent transfers sent and received from other countries reached 25.1 million euros, more than three times more than in 2022.
