“The attack is unacceptable and does not represent the Portuguese people”: MAI responds to attacks on immigrants in Porto

Interior Minister Margarida Blasco guaranteed this Saturday that “there is zero tolerance for racism” and that “the shameful attack on immigrants is unacceptable and does not reflect the interests of the Portuguese people.”

“This notorious attack on migrant citizens this evening is unacceptable, this kind of behavior is unacceptable,” the minister said, adding that the attack “does not reflect the interests of the Portuguese people and the Portuguese do not support this kind of attack.”

The minister spoke to reporters in Figueira da Foz, where she presided over a ceremony to mark International Fire Fighters Day.

Six men have been identified and one was detained for possession of illegal weapons following attacks on immigrants in Porto, according to PSP spokesman Sergio Soares, who updated the information to say that a judge had ordered the preventive detention of the detainee.

“These are people who are looking for our country because it is a safe country and there is such a bad, vile situation going on… on behalf of the government I can say that there is zero tolerance and we will maintain that zero tolerance and not for racism. not to acts of xenophobia,” the ruler emphasized.

In her statements, Margarida Blasco also emphasized that “the training of the security forces will continue to remain one of our many priorities.”

The interior minister’s statements come after a warning from SOS Racismo, which today reported that in recent days in Porto an organized group has carried out racist attacks on immigrants living in the city, a situation that has forced some to receive hospital treatment.

“In recent days, an organized group of people formed a militia that invaded houses and attacked immigrants in the city of Porto. Using sticks, sticks and knives, the group beat several immigrants in their homes. The attacks were planned and properly orchestrated to spread terror and target the largest number of immigrants. Homes were destroyed and several people had to undergo hospital treatment,” the press release said.

Early on Friday morning in Porto, at about 1 a.m., the PSP was alerted to an attack on two immigrants in the Campo 24 de Agosto by a group of four or five people who fled before the police arrived, the door reported. -voice indicating that two of the attackers were being treated at the São João hospital.
