Angola officially declares Kizomba an intangible cultural heritage

The Angolan government has declared kizomba and chianda, genres of Angolan music and dance, as the country’s cultural and intangible heritage in the areas of social practices, rituals and celebratory activities.

The executive decrees, signed by Culture Minister Filipe Zau, were published on Saturday in the Diário da República newspaper.

The declaration of cultural and intangible heritage aims to “prevent its usurpation” and promote measures “aimed at enhancing its value and preserving it for future generations.”

Marimba and quissanje have also been recognized as national intangible heritage in the field of traditional knowledge and crafts.

The Angolan Executive also designated as historical and cultural heritage the United Methodist Church of Malanje, the Catholic Mission Church of Cuvango in the province of Huila and the building of the College of San José de Cluny in Luanda.
