The Secretary General of the CGTP told Luca this Wednesday that the first meeting with the President of the Republic was “quite positive”, emphasizing that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is “sensitive” to the problems presented by the central union.
“It was a very positive meeting because we were able to ask the president fundamental questions that concern workers today, which arose at the CGTU congress and which, as we see, cannot be resolved through a government program. […]which is on the path of worsening relations with the world of work,” said Thiago Oliveira in a conversation with Lusa.
The union presented to Marcelo Rebelo de Souza the need to increase wages, fight insecurity, deregulate working hours and public services, which he said were “under huge attack.”
To mark World Social Security Day, several dozen people gathered outside the building on Avenida da República, calling for the strengthening of the system and believing that it is threatened by the government program of the executive branch led by Luis Montenegro.
“What is stated in the government program is an attack. When it puts the social security system in competition with the private sector, it obviously aims to decapitalize the social security system,” he noted.
For the CGTP, “a different policy is urgently needed” that meets the interests of the workers, and “not the interests of half a dozen representatives of big capital, which continues to bring in millions in profits.”
Thiago Oliveira also noted that the head of Luis Montenegro intends to improve the results of large companies, for example, by reducing the tax burden.
“The President was sensitive to the issues raised, to the problems whose existence was demonstrated by the VKTP. Now we need a different policy for the country that overcomes the difficulties faced by workers,” he said.
Thiago Oliveira added that he had already conveyed these messages at the Social Accord meeting on Tuesday, demanding political solutions, despite the fact that in his opinion it is difficult to obtain such “answers from the PSD-CDS government.”
