Financial needs are the main reason one in eight retirees continue to work after retirement, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) published on Wednesday.
The majority of pensioners (57.5%) stopped working after retirement and 29.3% no longer worked, but 13.2% continued to work, receiving an old-age pension at the end of 2023.
Financial needs (46.5%), as well as the desire to maintain productivity (30.8%) and social inclusion (10.9%) are the reasons why retirees continue to work.
Almost 70% of pensioners receive pensions of up to 1000 euros. Among those surveyed, 65.3% of women receive a pension of up to 600 euros. Among men, this percentage was 37.7%.
At the top of the pyramid, where old-age pensions exceed €2,000, are 8% of male pensioners and 4% of female pensioners.
