Campaigning for Sunday’s elections in Catalonia ends today with the question of whether independent politicians will continue to lead the regional government as they have for the past 14 years, or whether a new phase will open with the Socialists at the helm.
The latest polls were conducted last Monday – Spanish law does not allow such surveys five days before an election – and all gave a clear victory for the Socialist Party, but without an absolute majority.
To get into government, Socialist candidate Salvador Illa needs to negotiate with other parties, including the independent parties, which in Madrid supported the government of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, but in Catalonia they have been in an alliance for 14 years in a row to always guarantee nationalist leaders and separatists.
