Journalist Fernando Emilio died this Friday at the age of 77 from cancer, the Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC) said in a statement published on its official website.
“The Portuguese Cycling Federation deeply regrets the passing of Fernando Emilio and expresses its deepest condolences to all his family and friends,” said the note, recalling the journey of the honorary FPC member awarded in April 2023.
The Federation recalls Fernando Emilio’s long career in the media, during which he “began to distinguish himself on radio with his reports on football and, above all, roller hockey.”
“Passionate about cycling, he also made a name for himself reporting on cycling on radio before embarking on a career in the press. For almost two decades, he wrote about cycling for the newspaper A Bola, one of the journalists with the greatest passion. and a knowledge of sports recognized by different generations of communication professionals in Portugal and abroad,” he recalls.
Last August, the journalist was honored by Volta a Portugal for his participation in 50 races, and received a medal and diploma as an honorary member of the FPC.
The Alentejo native, known in the caravan as “The Godfather” for helping train generations of journalists who followed the Tour of Portugal, began his cycling journey at the Emissores Associados de Lisboa in 1973 and worked for Rádio Comercial (1975-2005) , before becoming a columnist for A Bola newspaper.
Fernando Emilio’s funeral will take place on Sunday, at 15:00, in Évora, and the wake will take place on Saturday, starting at 16:00, at the Sagrada Familia church in Alamos, in the same city of Alentejo.
