26 beaches in the Algarve have lost their quality

The Algarve has 26 fewer beaches awarded the Gold Quality award by the environmental association Quercus.
Nationally, 356 beaches are rated Gold, 38 fewer than for the 2023 swimming season. Compared to last year, the number of awarded beaches has increased in the Azores (12 more, to 58), the North (6 more, increased to 71). ) and Alentejo (3 more, increased to 31).

The remaining regions have fewer beaches considered gold this year: Algarve (26 fewer, now 59), Tagus/Oeste (24 lost, now 74), Madeira (32 to 24) and Centro (one lost, now 39). According to Quercus, the reduction in the number of awards was in most cases motivated by non-compliance with criteria relating to analyzes carried out in the 2023 swimming season. “There were somewhat persistent levels of pollution, not fully understood, but. which may have contributed to the impact of tourism pressure in some regions,” the association points out. Of the 356 awarded beaches, 291 are coastal (82%), 55 are inland (15%) and 10 are transitional (3%).
