Leader Erge Te’s Phrases Constitute Hate Crimes Against Immigrants

The three sentences delivered by the president of the far-right nationalist party Herge-te on Saturday at Campo 24 de Agosto in Porto constitute the crime of discrimination and incitement to hatred (Article 240 No. 2 of the Criminal Code). punishable by imprisonment for a term of 6 months to 5 years): “If they want to improve their lives, they go to countries like theirs”; “If we are given power, there will be mass deportations”; and “We cannot accept people of different races.”

José Pinto-Coelho also commits the crime of insulting the honor of the President of the Republic (Article 328, up to 3 years or a fine). He called Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa an “anti-Portuguese racist” and said that “he should have been overthrown long ago.”

The crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison. The action was monitored by several PSP agents who are required to report crimes they witness. The prosecutor’s office must begin an investigation.

“It celebrates a criminal attack on immigrants in the place where it happened,” says Mariana Mortagua, a representative of the Bloc de Esquerda. He criticizes the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, which is “trying to speed up processes by charging regularization fees up front.”
