Fernando Pimenta wins gold in the 15000m at the World Cup in Szeged

Canoeist Fernando Pimenta ended Portugal’s participation in the World Speed ​​Canoe Championships in Szeged, Hungary, with a gold medal this Sunday, winning the K1 5000m race.

Pimenta completed the race in 21.50.83 minutes, 21.68 seconds ahead of second place Dane Torbjorn Rask and 23.21 seconds ahead of third place Swede Joakim Lindberg in a straight final in which João Ribeiro did not compete. .

The most decorated of the Portuguese canoeists left Szeged as the hero of the national delegation, having already won silver in the K2 500 mixed race with Teresa Portela and bronze in the K1 1000.

Pimenta, a three-time world champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist in the K1 1000, completed the final in 3:25.48 minutes, beaten by two hosts, winner Balint Kopas in 3:24.19 and Adam Varga in second. , at 3.25.40.

Previously, the Benfica canoeist, who has already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, finished second in the second semi-final, which he completed in 3:29.01 minutes.

In the same competition, João Ribeiro was fifth in the third semi-final with a time of 3:33.04 minutes, which gave him a place in the B final, in which he was third, with a time of 3:28.12.

In the K1 200, Messias Batista, who will join Joao Ribeiro in the K2 500 in Paris 2024, also took bronze in 34.74 seconds, ahead of Lithuania’s Ignas Navakauskas, the winner, with a time of 34.32, and Poland’s Jakub Stepun, second, with result 34.58.

The “red” canoeist also qualified for the final, winning the second semi-final in 34.60 seconds.

Still competing in the K1 200, Iago Bebiano won the B final in 34.65 seconds after being fourth in the third semi-final in 35.64 and missing the main final.

Also this Sunday, Teresa Portela was second in the K1 500 B final in 1:49.21 minutes after being third in the first semi-final in 1:52.63, and Beatriz Fernandez was seventh in the second C1 200 semi-final, behind 47.95 seconds.

On Saturday, Joao Ribeiro and Messias Baptista in the K2 500 category, and Fernando Pimenta and Teresa Portela in the mixed K2 500 category won silver medals, while Beatriz Fernandez and Ines Penetra won bronze in the C2 200 category.
