An earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale was felt overnight on the island of Terceira, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said on Tuesday.
According to IPMA, the earthquake was recorded at 23:39 on Monday local time (00:39 this Tuesday in Lisbon), and its epicenter was located about four kilometers north-northeast of Santa Barbara, on the island of Terceira.
“Information to date indicates that it did not cause any personal or property damage and was felt at maximum intensity V (modified Mercalli scale) in Santa Barbara Parish,” the IPMA said.
This was felt less strongly in the parishes of Cinco Ribeiras and San Bartolomeu de Regatos, he added.
On the Richter scale, earthquakes are classified by magnitude into micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), weak (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0- 9.9) and extreme (when more than 10).
The Modified Mercalli Scale measures “degree of intensity and corresponding description.”
At intensity V, which is considered strong, the earthquake is felt even outside the home and can cause doors to sway, close or open, liquids to vibrate and containers to spill, and small objects that are in unstable equilibrium to shift or topple. , shows IPMA on your website.
