At least 14 dead in India

More than 100 people were trapped and at least 14 were killed after a billboard collapsed in Mumbai, India. A panel larger than an Olympic swimming pool fell under a service station, houses and cars during a thunderstorm this Monday.

Rescuers worked all night, extracting people from the rubble. About 75 wounded were rescued.

“The operation was very difficult due to the weight of the structure and the presence of flammable liquid and gas at the site,” said Mohsen Shahedi, a senior officer with the National Disaster Response Force. Reuters. “We believe that there is no one else under the rubble,” he added.

The video showed the billboard swaying in the wind before falling as dust and rain raged across the city, paralyzing traffic and disrupting flights at Mumbai airport.

The agency that owned the billboard did not have permission from the BMC, the municipal body said in a statement. The panel area was approximately 1,338 square meters (14,400 sq ft), nine times the maximum allowable size.

The BMC said it has given instructions to the agency.
