Euro 2024 football referees in Germany will delegate decisions during games only to team captains, and any player who shows disrespect or disagreement will be reprimanded, UEFA has said.
European football’s governing body on Tuesday published a document with some guidelines for the refereeing sector to improve, highlighting a desire for referees to better justify their decisions.
“We ask all teams to ensure that the captain is the only one speaking to the referee. We ask captains to ensure that teammates do not approach the referee, allowing conversations to be direct and decisions communicated in a timely and understanding manner.” respect,” says the document signed by the Italian responsible for arbitration, Roberto Rosetti.
Rosetti ensures that any player who ignores his role as captain and approaches the referee in a disrespectful manner will receive a yellow card.
If the captain is a goalkeeper, UEFA proposes that another field player may serve in this role along with the referee in situations where games take place on the opposite side of the field.
“A referee can’t explain a decision when you’re surrounded by 22 players,” Rosetti added, and when there are 200 to 250 decisions made in a game, that’s one every 22 seconds.
At Euro 2024, which runs from June 14 to July 14, Portugal will be refereed by Arthur Soares Dias, assisted by Paulo Soares and Pedro Ribeiro, with Thiago Martins serving as video referee (VAR).
The Portugal national football team is in Group F along with the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia.
