Today, parliament elects representatives of the defense, information and security councils.

This Friday, Parliament elects its representatives to the Supreme Councils for Defence, Information, Internal Security and Cyberspace Security, whose candidacies were the subject of an agreement between the PSD and the PS.

Although the elections of five representatives of the Assembly of the Republic to the Council of State were also scheduled for this Friday, they were postponed.

In the previous legislature, five representatives proposed by the PS and PSD were elected on a joint list (Manuel Alegre, Carlos Cesar, Sampaio da Novoa, Francisco Pinto Balseman and Miguel Cadille), and Chega presented an alternative list in which no one was elected. . If it happens again in this legislature, Chega will be able to elect one of the five candidates to the State Council, since it now includes more than a fifth of the deputies.

According to the constitution, the Council of State is composed of “five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the principle of proportional representation for a period corresponding to the duration of the legislative body.”

As for the elections scheduled for this Friday, candidates for the top defense, intelligence and internal security councils must be approved by a two-thirds majority by secret ballot.

Social Democratic deputies Andreia Neto and socialist Filipe Neto Brandao, who have already been elected to serve on this body in 2022, are proposed for the Supreme Information Council in the joint list of the PSD/PS. Gonçalves (PSD) is proposed as a replacement for Nuno Jorge. and João Paulo Rebelo.

The PS and PSD appoint deputies António Rodríguez (PSD) and former Secretary of State for Internal Administration Isabel Oneto (PS) as permanent members of the High Council of Internal Security. Deputies Pedro Neves de Souza (NSD) and Euridice Pereira (PS) were nominated as reserve candidates on this list.

The proposed deputies for the High Council of National Defense are Francisco Cesar (PS), who was already in this body, and Silverio Regalado (PSD), who were appointed as deputies to Mariana Vieira da Silva (PS) and Bruno Vitorino (PSD).

On Friday, parliament representatives will also be elected to the High Council for Cyberspace Security: the joint list includes deputies Miguel Costa Matos (PS) and Liliana Reis (NSD) as members, and Joao Torres (PS) and Ana Santos (PSD) as members. substitutes. Candidates for this high council, unlike the previous ones, will be elected according to the Hondt method.
