Students of the “End Genocide, End Fossils” movement announced that this Saturday morning they blocked Building C of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) of the New University of Lisbon in Lisbon.
A movement source contacted by Lusa said about 20 students are trapped inside the two-story building C FCSH on Avenida de Berna in Lisbon, demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
“After a week of occupying the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, students from the End Genocide, End Fossils movement blocked one of the Faculty’s main buildings this morning,” the movement said in a statement.
A source involved in the security of the FCSH facilities on Avenida de Berna in Lisbon confirmed that students have been locked in Building C since Saturday morning.
In the statement, the students also state that “this action occurs in the context of a student uprising that began in the United States and has spread to the rest of the world” and that “several schools are already engaged in the slogan ‘End Fossils, End Genocide.’
This student movement demands that the government defend an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a plan that will end the use of fossil fuels by 2030 in Portugal.”
The movement’s statement states that “following classes at the Faculty of Psychology, the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Physical Education, students announce that in the coming days they will expand their space of struggle to more faculties, and declare that they will continue to resist any attempts at repression.”
The students are also calling on the entire community to join a march to the European Parliament in Lisbon on 8 June to denounce the European Union’s lack of response to the Gaza genocide and climate crisis.
