The General Secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, expressed this Saturday “great concern” at the position taken by the President of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), José Aguiar-Branco (PSD), regarding what he considers the “xenophobic speech” of the Chega leader.
“We must fight hate speech, discrimination, xenophobic statements that we have witnessed in the house of democracy: xenophobic statements,” Pedro Nuno Santos told reporters as he arrived at a campaign event in Funchal, on the island of Madeira, with list leaders parties in the regional elections on May 26 and the European elections on June 9 to Paulo Cafofo and Marte Temido respectively.
Chegi leader Andre Ventura had an incident in parliament on Friday when he questioned the 10 years planned for the construction of the new airport, saying: “We can be much better than the Turks, the Chinese, the Albanians, we will have an airport in five years.” .
“The Istanbul airport was built and put into operation in five years, the Turks are not exactly known as the hardest working people in the world,” Ventura began with a statement, amid protests from several benches when Aguiar-Branco asked them to leave the airport. he will continue his intervention because “the MP has freedom of expression.”
From the point of view of the PS Secretary General, “xenophobic statements must be fought, they must be condemned, they cannot be facilitated, they cannot be propagated, they cannot be encouraged.”
“The SDP was convinced that by allowing Chege to use xenophobic, racist language, it could cancel or not give Chege media attention. We must fight racist statements, xenophobic statements, this is a daily struggle,” defended Pedro Nuno Santos.
