Zero believes that increasing the capacity of Humberto Delgado Airport represents a serious and unacceptable risk for the city of Lisbon and that increasing capacity is not feasible due to the enormous consequences, it was announced this Sunday.
In a statement released this Sunday, Zero states that it directly opposes the increase in capacity of Humberto Delgado Airport announced by the government, as it leads to increased aircraft traffic, noise, air pollution and the risk of accidents at the airport. city of Lisbon.
The association stresses that the increase in capacity at Lisbon Airport, not included in the recommendations of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI) for the new airport, goes much further, proposing to increase the airport’s capacity from 38 flights per hour to 45, “which would add to the distress that daily, “Many residents of Lisbon are exposed day and night due to intense aircraft flights over the city,”
“All responsible actors are required to commit and make every effort to implement, as quickly as possible, a credible environmental licensing process and the construction of new airport infrastructure that will allow the current Lisbon airport to be decommissioned,” he adds.
ZERO also denounces “what it sees as an attempt to avoid the need for an environmental impact assessment for the airport’s expansion”, announcing an 18.4% increase in its capacity, below the 20% that the law requires to enforce it document.”
However, the association argues that “the need for an environmental impact assessment of any work at Humberto Delgado is absolutely clear, regardless of the magnitude of the capacity increase or even whether one exists – in addition to this, it would be a lack of integrity towards citizens of Lisbon not to comply with this.”
The association also says it considers the government’s announcement to increase airport capacity to be hasty because due to “the scale of losses involved, ZERO believes that any request for a license to increase capacity would be rejected by environmental authorities.”
