Marcelo awards the Reprise of the Mafra School with the Order of the Infante D. Enrique

This Sunday, the President of the Republic awarded the Mafra Reprise School an honorary member of the Order of the Infante D. Enrique, praising his dedication to the military art of horsemanship and the prestige of the Armed Forces.

“Today, when we are here at the Reprise of the Mafra School, how can we not remember 75 years – a little more, 76 years, but 75 years since the first performance – also dedicated to equestrian art, military riding, the prestige of the Troops. Armadas and Portugal (…). I honor you by presenting you with the insignia of the Order of the Infante D. Henrique as a sign of respect and gratitude of all Portuguese,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke at the closing of the 66th Military Equestrian Week at Escola das Armas in Mafra, Lisbon district, surrounded by Army Chief of Staff General Mendes Ferran.

The President of the Republic also announced that on September 12, in connection with the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, he would, for the first time, on behalf of the Portuguese State, honor this institution as “heir to a centuries-old past dating back to the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century”, to which he paid “tribute respect and gratitude.”

“It’s deserved, it’s fair, it’s an honor for Portugal,” he said.

Shortly before, at the closing ceremony, Cavalry Colonel Carlos Campos, an Olympic knight, and the military knights of Portugal’s first medal-winning Olympic team in Paris in 1924 were honored.

“All the knights who are here, from several numerous and significant generations, our memory naturally belongs to all of them, for this past that ennobles the Portuguese army and Portugal,” he emphasized.

The Order of the Infante D. Henrique is intended to recognize those who have rendered relevant services to Portugal at home and abroad, as well as services in the expansion of Portuguese culture or in the knowledge of Portugal, its history and its values.

The 66th Military Equestrian Week began on May 10 and is a military sports event that has been held annually since 1955.
