Von der Leyen hopes for majority in race for European Commission presidency

Polls show Ursula von der Leyen the favorite in the race to become President of the European Commission, ahead of the European Socialists, whose candidate is Luxembourger Nicolas Schmit. However, the current president and “leading candidate” faces a difficult path to her eventual re-election to the European Parliament, as she needs to guarantee a majority that is far from guaranteed.

The recent “openness” expressed by von der Leyen regarding possible cooperation with the Conservative and Reformist Group, which includes such radical parties as Voice (Spain), Law and Justice (PiS, Poland), Reconquista (France) and “Brothers of France” Italy – has caused alarm among European centre-left political families.

Liberals, socialists, greens and the European left have already warned that they will not support his re-candidacy if there is any alliance with the radical right. If the German leader is elected to a second term, she will equal the longevity record of Jacques Delors and Durao Barroso. They were the only two presidents to hold office for 10 years.
