The current mayor of Maia, Antonio Silva Thiago, his predecessor Braganza Fernandez and four other defendants will stand trial on charges of embezzlement and “misappropriation of money” from municipal water and sewerage services.
In October 2021, the Office of the Public Prosecutor (PO) brought charges against six defendants, alleging that the criminal offenses were committed between 2013 and 2018, during which five of the defendants served on the board of directors of SMEAS – the Municipal Electricity Service. Water supply and sanitation of the Municipal Council of Maia, District of Porto, and at the same time of the Municipal Executive.
Some of the defendants asked to open an investigation, but the Matosinhos Criminal Court convicted (decided to prosecute) all the defendants exactly as the deputy was charged, a judicial source told Lusa today.
