The head of the PS list in the European elections, Marta Temido, met this Monday with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Portugal, to whom she expressed her “unwavering and unconditional” support and expressed hope for a peaceful solution through diplomatic channels.
Marta Temido was received by Ambassador Marina Mikhailenko on Monday morning at the Ukrainian Embassy in Lisbon and gave statements to reporters following the meeting, which lasted about half an hour.
The head of the PS list emphasized that a conference “on a peaceful resolution of this conflict” is being prepared in Switzerland in June.
“We therefore hope that there will be an opportunity to move forward through diplomatic channels and find a peaceful solution. Naturally, until this happens, our support for Ukraine is irrevocable and unconditional,” he said.
Marta Temido stressed that the position set out in the PS election manifesto is that one cannot “rest and turn away while bombs are falling on European soil.”
The PS included this meeting in its pre-election agenda for the European Parliament elections on June 9 “because of everything that is at stake”, in defense of “the continuity of the humanitarian, as well as military and financial efforts that the European Union is giving to Ukraine”, – explained the head of the list.
“And because we cannot forget that there is an enlargement process underway that will have a strong impact on how the European project is currently configured,” he added.
The EU has done “everything possible” within the current framework to support Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion, according to a former health minister.
Regarding Ukraine’s candidacy for the European Union, Marta Temido believes that “candidate countries cannot remain in the waiting room of the European project,” but repeated that “full compliance with the integration criteria” is necessary.
“And also from the European Union, its institutions, adaptations, both institutional and budgetary, which allow adequate absorption,” he added.
At this meeting, the head of the PS list for the European elections also wanted to “understand first-hand what the latest news is about the situation on the ground” and “the initiatives planned for the next few days of contacts with the European institutions.”
On the other hand, they talked about “issues relating to Ukraine from the point of view of food security, from the point of view of energy security” and “the situation of the Ukrainians themselves who live in Portugal,” he said.
When asked what her expectations are for this election campaign, which officially begins next Monday, PS Marta Temido said: “I work on the street, explaining to people the importance of what we are talking about.”
“Our job will be to strengthen what is at stake in relation to the European project that we take for granted, but which may not be so if we look away,” he said.
