As announced this Thursday, the PNP accused a 35-year-old man of extortion in the municipality of Alenquer, Lisbon district, as well as the confiscation of five firearms.
A GNR source explained to Lusa that the suspect was approached to borrow money and then pressured the beneficiaries to repay the debt in large amounts, harassing them and threatening them with death.
“There were people paying off their debt in triplicate because if they didn’t, they would die,” he said.
As part of the investigation, which has been going on for a year, the State Police has identified at least two cases where a similar situation occurred.
According to the same source, the suspect, who has a criminal record for extortion, arms and drug trafficking, “has made criminal activity his way of life.”
GNR troops carried out four search warrants, three on a house and one on a vehicle, in an operation supported by soldiers from the GNR Intervention Unit.
In addition to the identity of the suspect, five firearms, 419 ammunition and 5,760 euros were seized.
The suspect was named as the accused and the facts were submitted to the Alenker court.
