Spanish police announced this Thursday that they have recovered a painting by Irish-born British artist Francis Bacon with an estimated value of 5 million euros, one of five paintings stolen from a house in Madrid in 2015. According to local press reports, the paintings were stolen from the apartment of Jose Capelo, Bacon’s friend and former lover.
“Study for a Portrait of José Capelo,” painted in 1989, is the fourth painting to be discovered, according to the Reuters. The total estimated value of the five paintings is 25 million euros. Three paintings were discovered in 2017.
In February, police arrested two people accused of receiving stolen art in the Spanish capital, leading them to eventually discover the painting at a property in Madrid.
Since the investigation began, sixteen people who allegedly planned and carried out the robbery have been arrested, police said in a statement.
Bacon, born in Dublin and died in Madrid in 1992, was one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, known for his disturbing vision of the human body.
