This Friday, Taiwan deployed dozens of Chinese warplanes and warships off the coast in the second day of military exercises on its territory in response to the inauguration of a new president.
Mainland China released details of the exercise, which showed Taiwan surrounded by the People’s Liberation Army, the country’s armed forces. A new animated video shows the Chinese army closing in from all directions, with Taiwan surrounded in a circle.
Even so, there were few signs of concern among the island’s 23 million residents, who have been under threat of Chinese invasion since the two sides split during a bloody civil war in 1949. In the bustling capital Taipei, business continued as usual.
