Two people have been detained in Chile on suspicion of involvement in a forest fire that killed 137 people in the center of the country in early February, Chilean authorities said.
The Public Ministry of the Valparaiso Region confirmed on social networks at around 21:00 on Friday (2:00 this Saturday in Lisbon) the second arrest and indicated that the two suspects should be formally charged this Saturday.
A few hours earlier, the director of the Chilean investigative police, Eduardo Serna, confirmed at a press conference the arrest of the first suspect, a firefighter.
“This was released today [sexta-feira] arrest warrant for the culprit of the fires that occurred in February in the Valparaiso region,” said Eduardo Serna at a press conference organized after the end of the investigation.
The massive fire began on February 2 in four simultaneous outbreaks in the Peñuelas Lake Natural Park, near the city of Viña del Mar, 110 kilometers northwest of the capital Santiago, and spread quickly due to strong winds and extreme temperatures.
