South America’s 2030 World Cup bid could include Bolivia

Under Argentina’s proposal, South America’s candidacy to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will compete with the one that brings together Portugal, Spain and Ukraine, should be expanded to five countries, including Bolivia.

“Our Argentinean team brought the World Cup to our continent and it would be a great joy if, after 100 years, the World Cup could return to where it all began: South America. This candidacy belongs to the entire continent. I would like and propose that our sister country Bolivia be part of this dream,” Argentine President Alberto Fernandez tweeted.

For now, this dream brings together “albiceleste”, Qatar’s 2022 champion, with its neighbors Uruguay, its original partner in the idea, Paraguay and Chile, and to be included in Bolivia, only Brazil, which hosted the event in 2014. , will be excluded from the regional project.

In 2019, the President of Colombia promised to join Peru and Ecuador in an alternative way that was never formalized.

If the inclusion of Bolivia is confirmed, it will be the most comprehensive proposal in terms of host countries, which will have an absolute record of three in 2026 when joining the US, Canada and Mexico.

CONMEBOL tries to keep up with the competition by focusing on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in Uruguay, bringing the event back to the mythical Centenario Stadium, while UEFA supports the Iberian duo, reinforced by Ukraine, in a message of peace and unity that brings the nation into play subjected to military invasion by Russia.

With the increase to 48 teams in the competition, the idea of joining the World Cup on more than one continent also arose in negotiations that included European Greece, Asian Saudi Arabia and African Egypt.

FIFA even proposed an agreement between Portugal and Spain with Morocco, which lost candidacies in 1994, 1998, 2006, 2010 and 2026, however this idea was rejected by the Iberian duo, who subsequently opened the doors to Ukraine.

The venue for the 2030 competition will be determined at the 2024 FIFA Congress at a location to be determined.
