A 58-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on suspicion that he “inadvertently” started a forest fire while burning farmland in Gondomar, Porto district, GNR reported Tuesday.
The police statement explained that the fire in Melres Parish started after the burning of agricultural residues got out of control.
According to him, volunteer firefighters from Melres, San Pedro da Cova, Gondomar, Valbom, Carvalhos, Avintes, Sete, Paredes, as well as the air force from Santa Comba Dao, fought the flames.
The detainee became the defendant, and the facts were transferred to the judicial court of Gondomar.
The GNR recalled that the main cause of fires in Portugal is arson.
In addition, the police stressed that at any time of the year it is forbidden to burn cut down and piled shrubs and any kind of forest or agricultural residues, as well as set fire to it without permission or prior notice.
