The Food Bank’s anti-hunger campaign collected 1,755 tonnes of food from more than 2,000 commercial premises across the country this weekend, the social solidarity institution said on Monday.
The collection results represent “an increase compared to the cost of a similar campaign last year, on a weekend marked by the coincidence with various events such as the Football Cup final, concerts, ribbon burnings, thus confirming both solidarity and the Portuguese or renewed trust to food banks to fight hunger,” the organization said in a statement.
“In times of great anxiety and some uncertainty such as those we are experiencing, our hearts are filled with the fact that important values such as solidarity and active civic participation remain strong and unchanged among the Portuguese people,” said the President of the Portuguese Federation. from Banks Alimentares Contra a Fome (FPBACF) Isabelle Jaunet, quoted in the statement.
The collected food will be distributed to “more than 2,400 social solidarity institutions, which will reach approximately 360,000 people with demonstrated food needs,” the note also said.
In addition to this personal campaign, in which approximately 40 thousand volunteers took part, until June 2 it will also be possible to contribute through vouchers available in supermarkets or on the electronic platform available at www.alimentestaideia.pt.
Last year, 21 active anti-hunger food banks distributed 25.75 thousand tons of food, with a total value estimated at more than 39.4 million euros.
