The head of the BE list in this Monday’s European elections accused the European Union and the government of cynicism in their position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the leader of the parliamentary bloc asked Europe for a “civic uplift”.
At the first BE rally of the official campaign for the European elections on 9 June in the Escola Secundária da Portela, Moscavide parish, municipality of Loures, in Lisbon, Catarina Martins recalled that the International Criminal Court (ICC) had already demanded that Israel withdraw from Rafah, in the south Gaza Strip, where an Israeli attack recently hit a camp for displaced people.
Katharina Martins acknowledged that the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell, had said that Israel could not insult the international court, but she regretted that it was an “isolated voice” in the European Union.
“Most of the speeches were cynical. Paulo Rangel, the Portuguese Foreign Minister, decided to say that no government has done so much to recognize the State of Palestine. He forgot one detail: recognition of the State of Palestine. cynicism, and it is against cynicism that we rebel,” he said.
From the point of view of the bloc’s candidate for a seat in the European Parliament, it is also cynical for the European Union to “support an association agreement with Israel when it is committing war crimes and committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.”
“We are rising against cynicism, sanctions against Israel now. Immediate ceasefire, free Palestine,” he exclaimed to one of the biggest cheers of his speech.
Earlier, in front of an audience that included BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua, BE parliamentary leader Fabian Figueiredo argued that the European Union needed “civic upliftment, a source of peace and freedom.”
The MP believed that many of the main figures in Union policy, such as Ursula von der Leyen, “give Europe a bad reputation” and “are the face of morally bankrupt policies.”
Fabian Figueiredo warned that “genocide is underway” in Rafah and accused the Portuguese government of “knowing in detail what is happening and cooperating.”
“A vote for BE is a vote for Palestine. This is a vote for a Europe of peace, justice and social rights. A Europe of socialism in democracy,” he said.
