Spain recognized the State of Palestine, which includes the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This was announced on Tuesday morning by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez.
The Spanish President has indicated that the capital of Palestine is East Jerusalem and that he will not recognize any changes to the 1967 borders unless the various parties agree.
“This is not a decision that we are making against anyone. This is an urgent need to achieve peace,” Pedro Sanchez stressed, adding that the decision is based “on international respect.”
Following Spain, Ireland and Norway will also recognize the State of Palestine this Tuesday, joining more than 140 countries that have already done so and do not include Portugal.
According to Sanchez, a Palestinian state must be “viable” with the West Bank and Gaza Strip connected by a corridor to the capital East Jerusalem and administered by the Palestinian Authority.
In this way, the Spanish president believes he is making a “direct rebuff” to the terrorist group Hamas, which opposes the two-state solution.
